I mean, it looks pretty clean (but has over 150K miles) , but that price is insanity. I have driven one of these, and I cannot for the life of me see paying more than $6000, even for one this clean. I mean, it’s not even a Westfalia! FOR FUCK SAKE A COUPE QUAT TRO ISN’T WORTH THAT MUCH.

Regardless of how clean it is, the mileage isn't low. Major cp

The background it’s shot against should be some clue as to the sort of buyer the seller expects... a rich idiot with more money than sense.

People have been asking unreal money for Vanagons and Bay Window Type 2s for years now. I have no idea how many actually sell for that much, but their owners certainly ask for it.

$25k? Naw.

those graphics could overwhelm the best of us

The flip vibe is strong with this one.
Still, I have seen them (offered) for more out here. There’s a certain monied kinda-outdoorsy type who likes to drive these to their 3500 sq ft “cabin”.

wow, syncro prices have actually come down a little.
EDIT: I thought the price was 6 grand. yeah 26 grand seems stupid high, even for these. It’s not like its a good vehicle.

WHO IS DUMB ENOUGH TO PAY THOSE PRICES FOR THOSE P IE CES OF SHIT?????? They are objectively AWFUL cars, and no better built than any other VW of thei r vintage (cheaply made and haphazardly assembled) ... Why??????
WHHHHYYYYYY!!!!!!!!??????
I understand S tanceBros more than I understand people who pay these totally ridiculous amounts of money for these things...

Ok, I do kinda dig the 4x4 graphic...
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:24 |

They’re awful.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:28 |

It’s cheap because it’s not a Westy....
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:28 |

Split windows got way too expensive, so people looked at these and figured its a van, and it says VW on the front, that’s close enough, these should probably be worth a lot, too.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:29 |

but... bu tthey could have a very nice 1st gen Range Rover for that money, and it would be just as hipsterey and a genuinely nice truck.....
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:31 |
|
but why?????????????????????????????????????? They’re so.... Not good. (both Split-windows and 80's Vanagons)
I had some friends who had an 80's Vanagon, and when the finally scraped enough money together to buy a Dodge Caravan (a 2nd gen caravan mind you) they couldn’t get rid of that Germanic POS fast enough, and I don’t blame them...
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:36 |
|
Or a nice 80s Wagoneer, which is even more hipster and probably a lot more comfortable and easier to live with.
This is the same logic that had the 21 window microbus as a potential 6 figure car.

Hey
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:39 |
|
Oh yeah, Grand Wagoneer would be a baller choice... though they’re kinda in the psycho price range these days too... an OG Range Rover is actually cheaper.

The Britishness scares me there :)
One could probably even eke out a decent private import early G-Wagen (if they do some footwork themselves) for that kind of money, and I know what I’d rather have.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:43 |
|
But why? Can you tell me why? I can understand liking a shitty car, I like early FWD Ford Escor ts... but I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for one.

The 16" Syncros go for like $50k. The people Subie swap them around here. I know one with all that and ARB parts. They didn’t make a lot of them, I remember looking into it and thinking they were in fact pretty rare.

I think that’s at Shelburne Farms
![]() 06/01/2020 at 17:52 |

Like I said... Cool place to visit I guess... The barns are pretty amazing.

I didn’t know “original windshield ” was a thing anyone cared about.
But yeah... CP.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 18:28 |
|
LOL... the price is pure crack pipe... even if the seller was including the awning, roof rack and golfball shifter.
A new Dodge Grand Caravan with a small pop-up trailer would be a much better option... and cost about the same!
The ONLY way this might be worth the asking price is if there was a turbocharged Porsche H6 installed in the back.

The real bargains are Eurovans because they are better in every way plus actually usable in traffic while everyone hates them because they are too euro (in the name).
![]() 06/01/2020 at 18:42 |
|
How many Eurovans + 5 day camping trips + conversions could you buy with that? I'm thinking at least 3 and they would be less miserable.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 18:43 |
|
They don’t have the vintage charm that people are after, too modern and sterile, which goes along with the enhanced usability and reliability.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 18:45 |
|
So "vintage" means entirely terrible in every way? Not all old things are terrible but lots of cult classics are called that for a reason, mainly optimism in the face of unavoidable misery and financial loss.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 18:49 |
|
On the other hand...I could get a well worn 80 hp tractor of similar or greater vintage for that.
Which is why personal value is just that... personal.

Indeed it is.
A lso, hella CP

is that a house???
![]() 06/01/2020 at 21:37 |
|
No. It’s a Barn. (one of four on the property)
This is the house that goes with it: (well, the main house, out of several, including various levels of
guest and employee homes
)
One Name: Vanderb ilt.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 21:43 |

ah yea, that last part makes it all make sense.
![]() 06/01/2020 at 22:15 |

I’ll say one thing for them, that family did have consistently good taste. Or, at least, could afford to pay people with good taste to design/decorate their houses for them. Either way
![]() 06/02/2020 at 00:28 |

Take off $10,000 and then you’ll be at CP. Where it is now is a n irrational number.

My wife is from Mexico and we’ll be going down to visit at some point, so naturally I jumped on the Facebook Marketplace to see what kind of cars you can get down there. Vochos (Beetles) and Combis (Vans) are unbelievable cheap. So cheap I wonder how viable buying them and importing them to the US would be. It could be a fun side hustle once we get the house in Veracruz finished.
